It's A1, gold plated, rock 'n' fucking roll... awesome. The Botswanas came onto the east coast garage / rock scene in 1994 with the release of their debut 45 Little Witch. The 1995 release Cream Machine brought the group mainstream press coverage with it's riff oriented punk garage sound. 1997's CD Mockers and Rods cemented the band's reputation as one of the most kick-ass woman fronted rock n' roll outfits around. The band has also released a third CD on the spanish label Safety Pin and has just finished recording a new album for Feralette.
The Botswanas
Sleazy, drug-driven, New York trash rock with a bubblegummy edge... it's A-1, gold-plated, top notch, rock 'n' fuckin' roll. Awesome. Emily Smith, Eye Weekly, Toronto Their cleanshaven riffs and breaks - coupled with Eileen Ziontz's contemptuous growls - make their recent Cream Machine a rival to early Blackhearts and Blondie. Natasha Stoval, Village Voice The Botswanas are today's television set out tomorrow's hotel window. They're next year's curled upper lip on this year's nice little girls, and the flesh and bone "no" to the question "Do you really want to be like the others?" screamed from a thousand pink bedrooms. The Botswanas are you're gilt-edged invitation to the wide world of Bad. Mockers and Rods is one of the best Rock N' Roll albums this year; 17 songs and next to no filler. Songs such as "Jimmy and His Amps," "Soul Kiss," "Uptight," and "Super Heroine" are not only punchy, but have strong hooks ( a seemingly lost art these days) and waste little time getting to the good parts. Fran Fried, New Haven Register What makes everything else seem trivial and insignificant? Why, The Botswanas new release Mockers and Rods of course! At times it is explosive, taking the listener on an angry and rebellious ride to nowhere in particular. At other moments, moments I'm fond of, it just makes me want to dance. It is a collection that relays many topics and conditions of human interest. The melodies lock themselves in the mind and may completely monopolize your thoughts without warning. This is why I must advise the listener to "look out." Once Mockers and Rods gets going, whoever may be in earshot will be rendered helpless and unmotivated in all areas of motor performance, except listening and the periodic convulsions of pure rock n' roll pleasure. Timely Berol "Rock N' Roll has no beginning and no end for it is the very pulse of life itself" ...the immortal words of Larry Williams ring prophetically in my ears, because if one band define Rock N' Roll it is indeed The Botswanas! Col Gray, Vicious Kitten, Australia Lead vocalist Eileen Ziontz has been compared
to Debbie Harry but, to these ears, she exudes a lot more warmth and emotion
than DH ever has and she certainly gets the most out of it here (Mockers
and Rods). Jeff Shore, Jersey
